First impressions are everything! Your front door is one of the first things people notice as they walk up to your home. Likewise, your windows give others a short glimpse into your home as they pass by. Here are some ideas you can use to boost the curb appeal of your windows and doors.

Colour

Almost nothing draws the human eye more to an object than colour, and there are different ways you can maximize its impact for your windows and doors.

One of the easiest projects is painting your front door. Steer away from the basic grey and white, and add a bold pop of colour like red or blue if it fits into your home’s overall aesthetic. Painting your garage door to match will create a pleasing balance for the front of your house.

When you paint your doors, make sure you use exterior paint to protect it from the weather. Take the door off the hinges, sand away any peeling paint and imperfections, and wipe off the dust. Selecting the right type of plants for window boxes is important. Pay attention to how the varieties you choose grow to make sure they won’t eventually overwhelm your window space. To maintain the curb appeal that window boxes add, keep the boxes clean and the plants neat.

Coverings

Your window coverings are just as important for the exterior curb appeal of your home than the aesthetics they give your interior living spaces. Finding the right type of window coverings is crucial to making sure they boost your curb appeal, not hurt it.

One way to make sure you’re making a positive impact on your home is to keep uniformity in mind when choosing and installing window coverings. They should work together with the windows they’re on, along with the exterior as a whole. Any windows that can be seen from the street should have the same coverings. Wood blinds in the front windows and a roller shade in the kitchen will clash from the curb. Pick your favourite type and use it for all your front-facing windows. 

Pay attention to details like how open each window covering is if you want to add to the symmetry even more. With motorized blinds, this is an easy task. Just choose the same level for each window and the rest can be controlled via remote control or an app.

Last, consider how the window coverings you install inside complement your decor outside. Wooden blinds are a good option if you have wooden planters and decor on your lawn. If you live in a more modern home, pick covering styles with straight, sharp lines to get the most out of them.

Upgrading

Sometimes, there isn’t a lot that can be fixed with colour or blinds. Windows take a beating from the weather, and eventually need to be replaced. This requires some decision-making and cost, but it’s a worthwhile investment if you’re looking for a significant upgrade in curb appeal.

If your windows are scratched or dust has become trapped inside the pane, new clear windows will provide an immediate benefit whether you’re looking in or out. It also doubles the benefits of new window coverings because it increases their visibility from the outside.

In addition to the windows themselves, there are different upgrade options for frames as well. Front windows with black frames are a modern way to make a change from traditional white palettes. Black frames are versatile, fitting in well with brick, wood and white siding. Apart from the upgrade in curb appeal, investing in new windows and frames will also save money on energy, and provide your home with safety and security.
